9 - Personalization Principle #1

Brief Definition
According to Clark and Mayer (2011), the first Personalization Principle recommends that at least some portion of an e-learning subject be casual, informal, or conversational in written or narrated text. Research has shown that even though the user knows the text is not personally directed to them, this style is more effective in the e-learning environment.

An Artifact
In the course, Common Mistakes with Adjectives & Adverbs - English Grammar Lesson, the creator uses a conversational style to introduce and teach the subject matter. It’s spoken in first person, unassuming, and directed at the user. Just before instructor gets to the phrase in the closed caption below, she says, “Are you sometimes wondering when to use ‘good’ and when to use ‘well?’ Are you unsure whether you should say ‘real nice’ or ‘really nice’? Then join me in this lesson for a review of English adverbs and adjectives.” The author has met the requirements of Personalization Principle #1.
