Brief Definition
Like Contiguity Principle #1, the second Principle also has it basis on being in sync. Except it refers to the graphic and any associated audio explanation - perfect “side by side” timing is essential. As Clark and Mayer (2011) say, “spoken words (narration) that describe an event should play at the same time as the graphic (animation or video) depicting the event” (p. 102).
An Artifact
Study.com’s “How to Find the Square Root of a Number” is an example of perfectly timed video graphics with audio. With every new image, an explanation of it appears at exactly the same time. In the screenshot from the video posted below, the 3 lines of text appear individually right as the instructor says the new information: a) “A square,” b) “is just a number multiplied by itself,” c) “n.” Bravo! Very nice mastery of the Contiguity Principle #2.
